• Technical question: I've got paddles in the Subaru... FUCKING PADDLES!!!

How do they work on a CVT transmission? What sorcery is this? It's weird not hearing the car changing up the gears... So smooth, still loving it, took it on the motorway today and was very impressed with how quiet and comfortable the ride was...

  • yeah, you can drive it like a "manual" and use for engine braking...adds a wee bit of windy road fun, but mostly you're going to leave it in drive

  • Presumably it’s a stepped CVT, so it’s got logical gears as opposed to physical ones- literally 5/6 positions on the two cones that equate to fixed ratios that it selects as you pull on the paddles?

Early testing of CVT’s showed that people really didn’t like engine revs staying constant and road speed changing, so they made them perform in a similar fashion to a conventional gearbox thereafter.

I'm so relieved you didn't buy a Corolla.
