• Manchester I think. Got an old clubmate who had a couple. I'd wager the tubes are 853.

  • Ahhh interesting. Yeah after some cursory internet investigating this afternoon with @Chak and staring at some pictures of Reilly, Donohue and other steel frames, we reckon it might be 853.

I'm sure he'll chime in at some point, he knows more about this stuff than I do. Gona oogle the bb shell try find a frame number to help investigations.

  • @Skülly I don't really know much outside of the usual bit of digging and some visual cues. Atom seems to have a lot of 853 frames out there; the tubing profiles look similar to what Weigh/Donoue used on their tubing.
I'd hazard a guess this might have been a custom order for someone as the sizing is interesting and the add ones are too. I'd like to think it was a TT bike at some point.

The guard bosses are even more interesting and I have no idea why as the clearances won't allow for masses of tyre, but the rest looks distinctly 853. Would be interesting to weigh it and see if it might align with what a frame of similar size and material might. Original forks would have given us a tad more info maybe.

Doing a bit of further digging, it seems like a few of the Atom frames were made by Chris Reilly, who might have some relation to Mark Reilly of Reilly Bikes. I don't know, this is all hypothetical, but it is curious stuff.

Maybe with a serial number and some emailing we might know more. All in all, very interesting frame.

  • Think they were Manchester based.

  • Stockport, nr Manchester, I think. Rumour I heard was that Chris Reilly was associated with Will from Wills Wheels.
Chris was related to 'Spud' Reilly but I don't know of any other relations.
I bought the Pearl one but unfortunately haven't seen Will in ages.
Frame was almost certainly built to be ridden hard for serious milage so imagine the bosses were there to be used! Think the team raced as Atom Elite RC or something like that.
    Rear spacing might be helpful.
    Great frame.

  • Aha, all the above would fit with JD flogging one with an Orrell, probably got them at a jumble at the velodrome.

Yeah I think the mudguard eyes just suggest a flexible bike, track and winterbike sort of thing. It rains a lot oop north.

  • Dibs

  • I like the section of the downtube. : )

  • Sold pending collection + payment. Cheers for everyone that chipped in with knowledge and ideas, learned a lot. X

  • Not gonna lie, was kinda hoping it didn’t sell for long enough that I could put a lowball offer in (I can’t afford it regardless). Glad you got a fair price!

  • Hope this turns into a build thread with new owner :)

Curious to know if it's 853

  • Haha. not gona lie, i might have the same 🙃

  • Same. Very curious. Well here is the frame number on the BB shell for those interested.
