I don't think they're any more or less likely to shit themselves than your average econobox. Get a good one and maintain it, and it should be as reliable as the next car.
They're a fairly common car, not a performance car

Did anyone suggest a Mazda 6? I know, not fun but the GH series (2008) are a very good car - can't imagine one giving you trouble.
