If I convert the CD to an MP3 on a USB stick in a lossless format then I get the detail back?

Use a codec like lame, and rip using variable bit rate and it will sound fine.

A bit of dynamic compression helps in a car, as there's so much background noise.

Well of course it does help if the replay system adjusts to the ambient noise
