  • Interval session of varied length intervals to simulate having to work harder up random hills? Basically a fartlek I guess.

Or swap the workout with one later in the week. Or just do what you can and move on with the training plan. Missing one workout won't matter that much, just don't let it become a consistent missed workout!

  • Yeah, fartlek sounds like a good substitute, or even just a session of similar overall effort, e.g. tempo run.
(I do know of a chap who successfully did the Bob Graham Round (Lake District mad hilly fucker), who lived in the flatlands of Cambs and did all his "hill" training in a multi-storey car park...) :-)

My fitness is coming back nicely after a few consistent weeks including track sessions and 3x XC races. Kent County Vets (over-40s) XC champs in Dartford on Saturday. We should be favourites to retain the title, but I'll have to work hard just to make the team.

  • Had a nice run over the weekend. First time I've enjoyed running in a very long time.
Legs the next day were a bit interesting though.

Slow build back to marathon length is on.

Pace is getting there, backed up by a treadmill 5km at comfy pace today (prior to gym session- otherwise I would avoid at all costs).

Car Park hill training. Sounds like my wife who when the weather is truly dire will be found in our apartment blocks staircase for 30mins of stair reps. Gotta get it in I guess!

Would like to do some fairly regular 1/2 marathon./ 10 mile runs in the new year- off road preferred, is there anything like that on a 2 x monthly basis?

Would try XC but the isn't the season nearly over?

  • Lots of XC left, season runs Oct - Feb. So far we've had 2 of 4 Surrey League races, and main races still to come include the county champs (early Jan), Southern champs (late Jan, Parliament Hill... oof!) and the National in Feb. Are you in a club?

  • I'm not in a club- I've always been a bit lackadaisical about training- but my approach seems to work for the most part- and has done for previous 1/2 or full marathons.
Just have an IM in the future so trying to be more into the data side of things, and racing always helps!
Plus I love the mud. Started the running bug in the Peaks/Devon, and miss both immensely.

  • I don't know where you're based and maybe this is short notice but one of the few open XC races I've done is the Pirie 10 , it's this Saturday on Farthing Downs in Coulsdon.

Trionium organise some good off-road events; the Knacker Cracker 10k, Box Hill and Leith Hill HM both coming up in the new year. I've done their Midsummer Munro HM in the Summer, which is a beast.

My favourite (mainly) off-road race is probably the North Downs Run (30k) in June.

  • i just paid 299 (down from 399) for a 935 from wiggle, so i reckon 359 for 945 is probably good
now slightly annoyed that the 1 day old watch on my wrist could be better...

  • Short notice, but you never know...

Place available at the Portsmouth Marathon next month (my brother is no longer able to do it) let me know if interested; December 22nd, cold, wet and windy, but a flat course.

  • How much would he want for it? Have a mate who might be interested

  • Yours for a forum donation @Pifko

passing through 5km in 13 minutes 24 seconds.

    Ooof.

  • Went out at dusk today - urban woods are spooky in the dark! First half of the run was beautiful, persevered without my headtorch for the 3rd quarter and eventually put it on at the end, when I quickly realised it's hopeless.

  • I went out then too but headed toward Fletcher Moss else might've crossed your path.

Stopped to take a couple of sky pics, the colours were amazing.

  • Some amazing performances at the Valencia Marathon today. Andy Davies beat the UK V40 record (previously taken off Ron Hill by Steve Way at the Commonwealths a few years ago), and now one of our club's most prestigious records, Paul Pollock finally avoided injury long enough to run the marathon time he's worth, going second on the all-time list for Ireland with 2:10. Nice one Paul, see you at the Olympics in Tokyo!

Closer to home I'm glad to say that yesterday we did manage to defend our Kent County over-40s cross country title, closing 4 runners in the top 8, and I was 3rd scorer, 6th overall. Felt pretty good all round and nearly closed the gap on our 2nd scorer just 9 secs ahead. He'll say he didn't run as well as his 2:28 at London this year but I'll take that. ;-)

  • It was magical tonight!

  • Forum file upload function is so difficult to use

  • No next% at cross country...

  • The colours lasted quite a while too, was so calm.

  • Just got the all clear from the physio to start running again, suggested building back up using the couch to 5k programme as that will slowly increase the load on the ankle. 4 and a bit months it's taken. Ugh.

  • That's what I had to do after tearing my ACL and meniscus. I felt the same but it really turned out to be good advice.
