Golf mk5/6 with the 1.9 PD tdi if you want reliable and economical but very tractor like. Really not a fan of any of the CR engines, esp with any sort of mileage on them, yeah they are quieter and more responsive, but do barely any better than the petrols on fuel and when things go wrong its a fair amount of money (£300 per injector etc which fail like clockwork, dont get cheap ones).
Civic of that facelift spaceship shape are very good, diesels are reliable apart from they are known to have bad clutchs, 2008 to 2011 shape I think is the best variant?
Help/ advice needed- looking to buy a second hand car for £3k or thereabouts. Mostly for motorway driving and occasional tip/ikea runs. Was looking at a focus or similar as I want it to have a good 5 years out of it and fun/nice to drive. GF wants a hybrid to keep carbon footprint down but they’re all quite pricey.
Not sure where to start looking outside of autotrader and not keen at buying via eBay and the like.
