  • So, I've found my stolen bike ... it's locked outside a pub. I've locked my own lock around it and left a note with a crime ref number. I've also called the police to potentially help me free it but they are busy and can't send someone over ... how do I find an angle grinder at late notice in Cambridge?

  • How sure are you that's your bike? If you have the serial number and or other proof of ownership then lodge another report and then ask for CCTV footage from the pub and hopefully spot the 'owner'. Also get your mates around with an angle grinder, then give the police a courtesy call saying you are reclaiming the bike.

  • I wouldnt faff around. Iirc this is that lovely Ritchey Breakaway disc gravel bike? Cant be many of them about. I'd recognise one of mine in the street as well. I'd be all over retreiving it by what ever means and follow up with the paperwork afterwards. If needs Id sit there with a hack saw and spare blades for half an hour. What are the police going to say even if they do bother to stop if they see it? I have sat in Cambridge town centre cutting a bike free years ago when I lost the key. No one batted an eyelid and just walked past me.

Unlikely the current "owner" is the person who nicked it anyway.

  • ok so having done this, warned the cops I was going to free my bike etc -- I'm now getting multiple phone calls and emails from 1 police officer saying that I need to pay for the lock and the mudguards that the owner had installed from his own pocket. He's relented and said that I can ignore the cost of the lock cause it's the only way I could get my own bike back. But keeps emailing me about these fucking mudguards. They are pieces of shit that I'm going to bin but I think it's outrages that approx 5k worth of bikes were stolen, the police didn't even bother to put in the crime file the serial numbers and pictures, they didn't bother when I called them and told them I had phone numbers of drug dealers who had my bikes (2 out of the 4), didn't bother coming round when I had found this bike (3rd out of the 4) ... and yet I've now got 3 emails and 3 phone calls about the mudguards where he keeps offering to come pick them up.
