LA Recommendations?

Posted on
  • Travelling to LA with work first week of January, have meetings on the Monday and Tuesday, but taking time off from Wednesday to Saturday and booked an airbnb beside Venice beach.

Having never been to the west coast, I'm overwhelmed by the size of LA on a map, and keen to get recommendations from real life internet people on places to go and things to do in the area.

So, 96 hours in LA, what do you do?

  • I was working in LA for a couple days in spring based in Venice. I had a nice dinner and too many beers at The Rose and Cafe Gratitude was an interesting experience and tasty vegan brunch. No idea if these are go-to places.

I really wanted to try the food trucks but work got in the way. They look amazing.
You can hire bikes from the Rapha shop near’ish in Santa Monica, which I swore I’d do next time, as the cycling out of town looks great.
    LA traffic is ridiculous.
Someone recommended the Pine and Crane Taiwanese restaurant across town, and near Golden Saddle Cyclery, but ran out of time.

  • If the tour dates suit your visit, check out this place in the Hollywood hills, and go for the later viewing to see the sunset / city lights..

We did Airbnb near silverlake great little district

  • Yeah, visit Golden Saddle Cyclery and just hang out in Silver Lake - it's lovely!

If you can get out that far, go to https://www.topangacreekoutpost.com/, rent a mtb and go on one of their loops in topanga creek. Some excellent mountain biking with views across the city. The shop is great; they seem to have banana bread and coffee on tap. They even wrote us a thank you card for hiring their bikes that we received when we got home. Highly recommended.

  • What a great story, thanks for sharing.

  • Go up to the Getty, the building is amazing and they have loads of exhibits, there's a great view over LA too if the smog allows 😂

  • LA is awesome, so much to see and so. Loads of cool mid century architecture if you are into that - Frank lloyd Wright, Neutra, Lautner etc.

The California Science centre has a Space Shuttle AND Blackbird if you are into aviation.

Getty is an amazing museum, as much for the architecture and the grounds as the exhibits.

    LACMA also very good.

Bel Air, Beverley hills etc is lols to drive through and gawp at all the hideous McMansions etc.

Driving is shit but necessary for most places through. Venice to Silverlake for example will probably take at least an hour.

  • https://www.petersen.org/ would be of interest I imagine?

Yeastie Boys Bagels for some street food goodness: https://www.instagram.com/yeastieboysbagels/?hl=en

  • So I went recently - my questions a few pages back - but what I some of what I actually did and would recommend on short trip. Some overlap with what others have said.

    • Bike hire - didn't get round to it in LA, did it elsewhere. Have previously hired a basic hybrid in Venice and just cruised N and S on beach paths. You can go a couple of miles North, maybe nip to Santa Monica pier (Santa Monica is dull though IMHO), and a long way South, but it gets a bit sparse.
There are also various dockless City bikes and e-scooters but not sure of exact locations.

    • Petersen Car Museum - think the SciFi cars exhibition is still on. Did the 'vault tour' - expensive but excellent. Also Los Angeles County Museum of Art, La Brea Tar Pits very close. Didn't actually go in Tar Pits museum, it is free to see actual tar coming out the ground

    • Golden Saddle is worth a trip. Sort of museum of memorabilia as well as bike shop. Good for souvenir cap/tshirt etc.

    • I went to Dodgers game but wrong season now. Maybe consider Lakers game?

    • Consider walking up to Griffith Observatory for epic views, Terminator/La La Land etc etc location. Then down to Los Feliz - interesting area, bars, restaurants etc

    • Don't go to Hollywood.
