  • Tempted to throw a spare fork on my Vig and run a disc brake for winter/until I go back to the velodrome.

Think the headset is a Columbus Compass 1-1/8". Picture.

Can I just buy a a generic 1-1/8 crown race and be done [guessing not]?
OR do I need to buy a bottom bearing and crown race?

  • No need to buy a new bottom bearing but you do need a crown race that matches the specs of the headset (namely the correct width and angle to the bevelled surface that sits against the inner race of the bearing). The specs should either be available online or are often printed on the bearings themselves. Although finding a matching can be a pain, case in point only one online retailer stocked the correct FSA crown race I needed to install on a second pair of forks recently.
