General Election 2019

  • I got a letter from Johnson today asking for me to use my postal vote for the local Tory candidate (old Etonian contemporary, massive majority).

How do they know I have a postal vote?

  • I feel that the fake twitter branding, fake labour website, fake Keir Starmer clip is just the tip of the iceberg. The underhand online tactics by the tories probably goes much deeper than even 2016 referendum, but is not being seen/ reported.

  • The parties (and anyone else who asks for it, and pays I think) can get hold of the marked registers of electors (the list that your name gets crossed off on in the polling station) after the election. This certainly shows who is a postal voter as per the previous election.

If you are a candidate you can also get hold of the full (non edited) register of electors, but I don't know if that has the bits to say if people have registered to vote by post/proxy etc on it. I would suspect that it does.

    Sorry, this was for @Big_Ted

  • more tory below the belt trumpy shitfuckery.

    https://www.labourmanifesto.co.uk/

    vote tory? cunt.

  • All the other parties should really go for this. The Tories have become the party of cheats and liars. Their campaign HQ has been taken over by fraudsters trying to deceive voters. This is the argument to use on the doorstep and everywhere else to demoralise traditional responsible Tory voters.

  • I don't know why labour and the opposition parties aren't making more in this election of the chaos and illegal stunts pulled by number 10 over the past 6 months - lying to the queen about prorogation, trying to force through a no deal etc.

  • Because that doesen't appeal to the tory voter brain, numbers do, NHS does.

I nearly had tears in my eyes reading the immigration section of Labour manifesto. No mainstream party in western world has balls to be that radical even in a manifesto. My green vote is now a labour vote.

They have come a long way from the immigration mug.

  • Ah thanks, the letter was from Johnson on behalf of the MP so that makes sense.

I was obviously swayed by the power of the argument - highlight "the great thing about a majority government is that it can get stuff done" - but then I remembered that the MP wrote in the local paper recently that global warming was down to vegans and we should all eat more beef to save the planet. Coincidentally he is a dairy farmer.

  • Man that f-ing Priti Patel is some next level cunto...

    Jesus.

  • This is good to hear.

Willie Rennie - the guy who interrupts and interrogates the guy on his beliefs instead of offering a response to libdem actions - should be absolutely ashamed of himself. Fucking libdems.

  • I know it's Question Time, but anyone seen this clip of a guy claiming that earning £80,000 doesn't put him in the top 5% of earners?

How do people that stupid manage to get to that earnings. Does he really think that half the country earn more than that? Take a look around.

  • Can I have a decent response for people who run their own business and might be concerned about paying a new minimum wage of £10? This increased cost is going to be a negative thing if profits are tight.
Why should they vote labour in this situation?

  • Because if their business can't support paying someone enough to actually live on the basis of their labour, then their business model has no place in a decent society?

  • That's a very kind and understanding response.

  • I guess the question is who should we prioritize in this case. The workers or the small business owners. The small business owners have methods at their disposal to try to make up for the lost profit. Workers can only quit (or live in poverty).

  • I know it's Question Time, but anyone seen this clip of a guy claiming that earning £80,000 doesn't put him in the top 5% of earners?

word on the Twitter street is that he doesn't work and is the Son of some wealthy Duke or something and is spending all of Daddy's money (allegedly)

EDIT: aaand that has been proven NOT to be the case already - ha! he is just some thick fuck who manages to earn £80K

  • Yeah, I was being flippant, but the point has just been made by (whoever that is with the invisible username), if you are not paying your workers enough to live then one of two things is happening (i) your business isn't working, (ii) your business is working, but you (the business owner) are profiting from others' work, while (very possibly) society more broadly has to contribute to supporting them.

For a more positive spin, you can take the Henry Ford approach that it's really useful for a business if its employees can actually afford what they're selling.

  • Were that the case, he wouldn't be taxed anyway, as it's a tax on income, not on wealth.

  • I'm thinking of a lot of small businesses in London - food places. The London Living wage is > than the minimum wage.
I imagine profits are quite tight. It's absolutely right to pay the staff a decent wage, but the purpose of running a business is so the owner makes a profit/enough money so they can afford to run their life from. Right?
If they have to let people go to pay the increase - that's problematic
If they fold - that's really problematic
If they increase their prices too much, the customer base will go down - problematic

If the area they are in has little disposable income - and we can see that in London this is the case as it is everywhere - how can a business owner (and in this case it will be a small business rather than Starbucks) maintain profits/their living arrangements and pay their staff decently?

  • I ask, because the living wage is always brought up as "oooh, I can't do that" and I don't think many small food places are run by cunts who want to wear vicuna and alpaca underwear.
