The black cat "Thing" is mostly down to deep rooted superstition. They are both Lucky and Unlucky depending where you are in the world.

Couple of hundred years having a black cat would have been enough evidence for the Witch Finder General to burn you alive. Unknown if the WFG Matthew Hopkins is a distant relative of what could be called a modern witch hunter and someone who uses scaremongering for there own ends Katie Hopkins.
