  • Is anyone running VO hammered or smooth guards in 700x45 over 40c tyres? For some reason they only seem to offer 52mm size in the ‘zeppelin’ which I don’t think will look right on a modern bike, but hard to tell what they actually look like from stock pictures.

What are the alternatives for a nice pair in that price point? I want black ones of course.

  • I have 52mm VO zepplins on my Surly Disc Trucker. They look sensible over my 38mm gravel kings. My 43mm gravel king Sks didn't fit as there wasn't eneough clearanace at the fork crown.

  • I have handsome cycles Mud Butlers in 45mm (very similar to VO hammered) over 38mm slick gravelkings. I wouldn't want to try and fit anything wider under them, I'd say close to the limit of functional clearance. 40mm tyres would fit but you'd probably start to get rub if you put in any kind of effort and you might start to get side-spray too.

  • I ran 38c with some smooth 45s, I wouldn't recommend going over that.
I also have the 52 Zeppelins on a cross check with 43c GKs. I don't think you'd get much more under.

  • Yes. Running Surly Knards (41mm, but close to 42mm) with SKS Longboards (45mm). They work fairly nice, but I am going to replace them with 50mm Gilles Berthoud though as I have clearance for them.

I'd also consider Pelago fenders (45mm as well). They are nice quality, slightly cheaper and easier to find. I also considered Zeppelins, but they've been out of stock for a year in every European shop I could find.
