I am thinking of a word that roughly means 'growing out of the soil' and when pronounced sounds something like cachtonous.
But can't for the life of me remember how it is spelled.
EDIT: How about Chthonous? I think that's close, but doesn't give me a lot of hits on Google.
There's chthonic, although that usually relates more to the underworld, and autochthonous, which means indigenous, or formed in its current location, or literally native to the soil.
