If you've got a grand to spend I'd be buying the newest lowest mileage petrol ford focus estate you can find. If theyve been looked after they are pretty bomb proof.
I needed to get a better car suitable for kids too and ended up buying a 3 year old dacia Logan mcv estate of all things.I'd never really considered a Dacia before but they seem to be very reliable, mechanically straight forward and very spacious for prams etc.

seriously though, I had a 1992 Legacy that I bought with 140,000km on the clock and sold with 284,000km on it, no oil leaks no smoke still in great mechanical order...really depends on the service history, gotta change that oil frequently and cam belts every 100,000k
edit: mind you it was an EJ22 motor
