I wouldn’t advise that. Children are even more costly than a new MBP!

That’s true! Said the poor father!

Catalina broke SMB sharing. I use a Fire TV, running Kodi on it to play videos which are stored in the Mac (via SMB) Since Catalina it can't play anything (connection and directory listing works, getting data somehow doesn't) so I now have no use for the Fire TV. Sad. Maybe it was time.
Switched to using Videostream, which is a Chromecast streamer app, free version works fine for my needs. But I think it transcodes videos to keep the FPS up, so no more 1080p, or it will freeze on medium bitrate scenes (which is everything on 1080p)

New monitor time. Is there any point looking for alternatives to the LG ultrafine 5k or should I just get it? So many £££...

• #14807
Careful with the high res monitors, at my previous workplace I got a 4k display (32" benq, not recommended) but turns out my Macbook was too outdated to drive it smoothly. So a new Macbook had to be ordered next week.

• #14808
Yeah pop over and buy mine.

Sounds like a lovely problem to have if someone else is paying
I've got a new mac mini so driving a 5k monitor shouldn't be an issue

Just had that issue with MacBook Pro's and the LG UltraFine 4K Display from the Apple online store. It appears that brand new MacBook Pro's don't seem to output at 4K which was a bit of a shame.
-
• #14813
The latest MacBook Pro can definitely use an LG Ultrafine 4K display. They have Thunderbolt 3 and support up to two 5K displays.
-
• #14814
In theory, yes. With the three MacBook Pro's and LG Ultrafine 4K displays we bought, unfortunately the MacBook Pro's either don't recognise them as having that display resolution, or they can't output at that display resolution. They still look great. Just not 4k.
-
• #14815
That's pretty shit tbh.
-
• #14816
Is this confirmed by Apple?
-
• #14817
My MacBook Pro works with the 5k just fine.
MacBook Pro’s can defo output at 4K, are you sure you’re not getting mixed up with actual and scaled resolutions? -
• #14818
It’s definitely not just a theory, so don’t give up yet. Look into what @chrisbmx116 says above.
This post might help: https://www.apple.com/uk/shop/question/answers/product/HMUA2B/A/what-scaled-resolutions-are-available-to-use-on-this-monitor/Q4JCXF9UHU4K4DPDK

Perhaps? I was just going on what I see in the settings option.

Might state the obvious here but tried switching to "default for display"?
-
• #14821
I think if you hold the option key when you select the “Scaled” button you’ll see the full list of available scaled resolutions.
-
• #14822
"Default for display" just goes to 1920x1080
I think I've managed to make it work with the option key on scaled resolution. But, it does appear to slow everything down quite a lot.
-
• #14823
Yeah, you're getting 4K. The 1920x1080 that is "default" is Retina scaled so 1080x2.
I'm not 100% sure how scaled work but note it says "looks like" rather than is which I suspect it's charming a PPI multiplier to simulate the scale of different resolutions while using 4k pixels.
You could try this ap which makes things a bit clearer... http://easyresapp.com
Als oho into "about this Mac" > "Displays" from the Apple menu bar. -
• #14824
Go to Apple Menu > About > System Report > Graphics/Displays. It'll give you two numbers "Resolution" and "Looks Like". The first is what's actually going over the wire to the monitor.
"Default for display" on my 4K is "Looks like 1920x1080", but it's rendered at 3840x2160 so you get nice hi-res text.

• #14825
Isn't 3840 × 2160 default res?
