Veloviewer Tile Bagging?

  • Ah, I forgot about Ruserius' thread:

    https://www.lfgss.com/conversations/280752/

Thanks to jaeyukdapbap for bumping it.

  • Started the festive seasons donations and I thought Veloviewer would be a good pick. So here it is for me:

    Imgur

Gonna convince @cgg (who would need no convincing) to go tilebagging.

  • 13821 tiles, average of 2.936 km per tile
    Max square 10x10
    Max cluster 348

    Is it good?

  • You have a lot of tiles, but because you're an intercontinental audax kind of guy, a lot of them are probably spread out. So your cluster and max square are pretty small. Have a look at page 1.

The Max Square takes dedicated, focused 'exploring' to expand. It can be quite fun though.

  • I see, thanks. Looking at the map it looks like I could easily extend the square and perhaps the cluster. Not sure I can be bothered but I'll keep this in mind next time I'm riding out of London :-)

Also it looks like I've missed a few in Jersey, darn.

  • Where are you all getting these clearer map images from? My VV tile map just looks like someone poured a tin of red paint over Greater London...

  • Select the "Black and White" map layer on the top left of the map. Then fiddle with the tile settings in top right menu box.

  • You can also reduce the line opacity, eventually removing the lines altogether if you wish.

  • That missing NE Epping one is going to be fun!

  • May 29th: Cluster 312, Square 10x10.
    October 12th: Cluster 468, Square 15x15

Been working on routes in the 20-50 mile range that cover a patch of squares. Not starting from home since it's probably a more effective use of time to drive out and do a 50 mile route than ride out there and do 20 tilemiles with 15 miles each way.

Next route will be 38 miles just east of the M6 starting near Ashton in Makerfield, which should take the square up to 18x18.

  • That is... dedicated. And very tidy.

  • Confessions of an Unadventurous Junk Miler

5210 tiles, average of 12.402 mi per tile
    Max square 25x25
    Max Cluster: 945

  • Wow, not bad.

Looks like you have a bit of riding to do around Slough though to expand :(

  • 12.402 mi per tile

    How did that happen?

  • By riding the same routes over and over again for 9 years and never getting the train anywhere, before realising that this tile-bagging concept existed. I've only done about 10 rides that were specifically intended to get tiles in that time..

  • Looking for some more inspiration to ride at the moment, so subscribed to VeloViewer to give this a go. My stats:

    Tiles: 7243.
Average distance per tile 4.504 miles.
    Max square: 15x15.
    Max cluster: 643 .

Added a few more west of Bradford today, don't think I'll be getting those ones in the city centre any time soon! Some in the Dales are basically impossible as there's no paths, which does limit things as that's the most logical direction to expand in. Also, touring is a great way of increasing the number of tiles (Paris to Madrid), but not so great for the cluster!

  • I'm up to 21x21. Revisited some of the routes I'd planned. Done a couple of tile-oriented rides in the last month or so.

  • Getting the really difficult tiles is half the fun

  • And the ‘easy’ in the routing even more so.

  • How have you overlaid planned routes with the veloviewer map?

Is it some kind of hack or accessible to those with boomer-level internet skills?

  • Veloviewer browser extension, shows the grid & completed tiles etc. on Strava's route planner.

  • Oli, beware: once you have it set up you’ll spend hours planning routes to minimise distance and maximise tiles. I do it at work at lunch a lot.

  • I download the unexplored tiles kml, convert it to gpx and then upload that to gpxeditor.co.uk (which I pay the subscription for), looks like this:-

That means I can plan the route on that site and make sure I go in all of the tiles I want. I've also got a script to clean up the converted kml->gpx file so that it just has one box for each area of unvisited tiles:-

Although it's easier to miss a specific tile if I use this for planning, I always go back and check the route on the first one to check every tile I want is visited.

(Haven't done any tile bagging for months due to injury and now lockdown, will aim to get back out when I get some cycling fitness back.)

  • That's the routes tab in veloviewer, plus this plugin for Chrome:

    https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/veloviewer-strava-plugin

The plugin also shades tiles and overlays the grid in the Strava route planner, so you can see how far along that farm track you actually need to go before you risk having some nimby ranting about footpaths at you.

  • This is ace... I've used veloviewer for a while now and seen the explorer score but never really looked into it before.

    My stats are:
3019 tiles, average of 16.442 km per tile,
    Max square 15x15
    Max Cluster: 635

Also slightly more interested in the running max square where I have 4 overlapping 9x9 tiles.

Will definitely get into a bit of bagging.
