  • I like that.. . Why do I like that?

  • Evening all, hoping for a bit of advice please!

My 30th birthday is coming up and gf has asked what I would like with a budget of around £300/£350. I'd like something memorable so thought a new watch would be a good idea.

Now i'm stuck, i'm trying to find something suitable and it's a bit of a minefield out there for brands to look for / deals to have, am I getting mugged off for rubbish quality etc.

I currently use one of these black metal fossil watches.

I'm very happy with it, although it is pretty banged up now, it has things I would look for in a new watch, specifically the lack of extra dials, metal strap, black watch face.

I'm hoping somebody may have suggestions, or even better something they think i'd like they'd be willing to sell? I'm certainly open to buying a quality used piece if it's worth the money, so any suggestions on what I could look out for on the second hand market for my price range would be great as well.

    Cheers all.

  • What size case are you after??

  • Been called cathedral hands for a while, they totally work, just not on that Seiko dial.

  • Timefactors would be my first thought in that price range. Something like this maybe (although there's a fair variety of other stuff)

After that I'd think maybe Seiko or Orient for a whole variety of styles.

A brass Helson shark diver for something a bit different

Or if you want a bit smaller and dressier a vintage Omega Seamaster

  • So much choice in that price range, although I think he's looking for a chrono.

  • List!!

    1. Chrono
    2. Black face
    3. Metal man bracelet
    4. What size?
    5. Quartz? Manual? Auto?
    6. Possible brands?
    7. New? Pre-loved?

  • Steinhart?

  • Sounded like he didn’t want a chrono to me.

Smiths Everest is a pretty good shout. My natural inclination would be a Seiko at that price point. Something like that very nice new 38mm Presage:

  • Or if you’re open to a diver style then one of those new Seiko 5s, or even a Turtle.

    Good spot, my bad.

  • I know you said metal bracelet, but I still thought it might be worth showing you an Alkin Model 1, which cost £250.

  • Out of curiosity has anyone seen a SARY149 vs SARB033?

  • What's the story behind Seiko Save The Ocean range?
Do they contribute to a STO charity or something?

  • 'These, however, are special versions that Seiko has produced in association with the Ocean Learning Center, a charity founded by Jacques-Yves Cousteau’s grandson, Fabien Cousteau, to promote ocean conservation. Consequently, these two watches, and a few others, are called the “Save the Ocean” watches.'

No idea if a percentage goes to the charity or if it is just an awareness thing.

  • Is that weird S logo the replacement for the 5 in a shield that they used to have? It's a bit ugly.

  • Thanks, I did some digging and found:

Furthermore, Seiko will contribute to the work of the Fabien Cousteau Ocean Learning Center...

I assume there is some funding, whether it is linked to the sale of the STO range is another matter.

Off to try some on tonight to see if they wear differently than my SKX

  • It's the new 5 logo, I've only seen it on the SKX lite models.

  • Pokémon baby-g.
Has a Pikachu on the backlight.

  • Because it looks good.

  • On the watch recommendation subject, anyone got any ideas on what I could get for my sister around the £500 mark please? Needs to be on a bracelet, ideally automatic with an okay power reserve and happy for it to be used if need me. Saw a really nice men's tudor on here the other day so maybe I try a second hand women's tudor, though this may be out of budget.

  • So definitely nobody for my gold Lincoln manual wind? Could do with cash more than a watch on the shelf :(

  • Still in love .,,,
