I use a leather belt, and wrap it around a towel dryer in the bathroom. The rough side is treated with Dovo stropping paste and the smooth side just as it comes. I use it to strop my shaving razor. Works amazingly well.
As @adroit says, an old belt is fantastic. You can buy belt blanks for only a few quid online if you don't have a spare belt to use. It was @31trum who first put me on to this...
belts are obviously perfect for stropping, but if you need a bigger area, MDF is again your friend!
A square of it, with some form of abrasive paste (even toothpaste) will have you honing the burrs off in no time.
