If i ditch the need for a manual gearbox it opens up much more potential contenders. And to be honest an auto probably suits my use case more right now
Bought a new car today and it's an auto, never had one before but I thought exactly the same. After driving it for a few hours already glad I went this route for schlepping around.

Sounds just like me 10 months ago.
I'm now on my 2nd auto. Both are Legacies. Great cars, very capable in every aspect, and very under-rated.@Colm89 how about the Range Rover Sport?
I think what you actually need is a Subaru estate. ;)
To be honest i might give up on trying to get something fun at this stage.
So far I've suggested the following to the wife:
Mazda 3 mps
Mk2 Focus st3
Hawkeye impreza wrx wagon
All of these were a no because they look like boy racer cars.
