  • On the other hand this is the Bicaz Gorge in Romania

  • Hungary looked flat and boring on the map, so we rode to Debrecen and jumped on a train to Budapest. From there we hit the Eurovelo to Bratislava, Vienna and beyond. This area is much covered and my notes are: forest roads are funner than the cycle path, Vienna is nicer than I thought, Germany is beautiful in autumn.

  • Love it!

Missus not keen on tandem but neither of us have ridden Japan and I'd love to go back and explore some more.

  • Love this thread! I've only spent 7 days on a tandem, but both me and my brother still, some 15 years later, one of our best vacations!

  • Wow! The Romania I missed.

  • Thanks for the updates, amazing as always.

  • I just caught up. I actually dug out my Strava from TCR to see how far from where I was they went. No mention of dogs... were they really in Romania? :)

  • Yup, no dog problems in Romania for us. We saw some (very) large and beautiful sheperd dogs, but well-behaved ones.

In fairness it doesn't seem like a nice country to race in, when we took the more direct routes they were busy and uninspiring.

  • And here in lies the problem with self route races.

  • Excellent updates, I'm still really enjoying this thread.

What is the curly thing you are holding in Romania? Looks like it could just as easily be tree bark as something from a fancy bakery.

  • Good point

  • (says someone who never raced)

  • That's Kürtőskalács. Tree bark pastry sounds good too

  • Chimney cake in English, ate a ton of that when I was a kid, but it's way too sweet for me now. :)
This thread is still top notch by the way.

  • The pictures, oh the pictures. Can't shut up about them. This one is my current favourite.

  • This thread is still top notch by the way.

It's all downhill from here. We are back in London, bike is in boxes at our friend's in Paris, waiting for us to find a flat where it'll fit. Five viewings booked for tomorrow. Hashtag real life

  • RL sucks eh?

  • Space in the garage if you need. BR3.

  • Just went through this entire thread again. Awesome. I don't have the words for this. I don't think I'd be courageous enough to do a venture like this.

  • Wet but nice ride to St Albans yesterday, a little celebration of 2 years since we left Tokyo. Crazy to remember what was going on in our heads that day, such nice memories

  • Ace. Funny how times passes and it seems like another life.

  • Yes and no. The fact that now we might be in a shop or at work or cooking and some random memory just erupts is so, so cool. Out of nowhere we're back in a mountain in Kyrgyzstan or a village in Vietnam, precious stuff. I think we talk about the trip everyday.

  • Yeah completely. The best is when certain smells transport you to places.
