  • I used Custom Cut Spokes in the past. Not super cheap but very fast delivery and reliable (so far)

  • Yeah I found them.

Problem seems to be finding a spoke manufacturer who makes black, straight pull, 2.6mm aero steel spokes :)

Closest OTP I can find are Sapim sprint at 2.3mm.

  • I think pillar makes fat aero bladed spokes, if you can find a distributor. Maybe AliExpress or eBay?

  • Pillar seem to do a 2.5mm which is close enough... just gotta find someone to sell me some!

  • Washers van help the nipples turn more easy at high tension. Hole cracks are not an issue. If the outer wall fails that means the the tyre pressure is pushing the rim apart and the out wall is being bent and stretching through chic loading to failure. That also.means the out wall is not thick enough. Make the rim heavier.

  • Nippleshop.de does pillar.

  • @broken_777 seems to be a Pillar of the spoke supply community

  • Oh, along the outer wall, I see what was meant by ‘under the rim tape’. Ignore me!

This what I posted when I realised I’d got the wrong end of the stick. Thanks for adding to my embarassment.

  • Hah, think my lack of correct nomenclature didn’t help.

The holes on the inner well bed are rough, and haven’t been deburred. Can’t imagine that helps...

That also.means the out wall is not thick enough. Make the rim heavier.

    Got any recommendations?

  • I have a bunch of surplus to requirement straight pull CX-Rays. ~70 spokes for a build that never happened.

Not 2.6mm, but 2.2mm... If you'll consider I can dig out the lengths and quantities.

  • Not a wheel building Q as such but any tips would be appreciated. I have set of knock-about Shimano wheels and one particular spoke on the radially laced front keeps loosening, have tried thread lock to no avail and it’s a trickster. Will be fine for weeks then it slacks off randomly. It’s like if Brexit was a spoke and it’s driving me crazy.

  • You will have to get Pillar from Nipple shop . Pricing is a bit jokes but if you want that particular diameter it's your only option.

Failing the above,I can custom cut you Cx rays for £2.30 or I have some limited stock of Pillar 1422 straight pulls for £1.5 a pop.

  • Is the tension the same than the other spokes? It may be an out of shape rim that you're compensating with more tension, or just an uneven build.

  • Pillar 1422 straight pulls for £1.5 a pop

Are these the 2.5mm? I need 289mm or thereabouts.

  • I have Wing21 in 287 and 289mm
    or PSR X-TRA AERO 1422 in 287mm

Both model have same weight so i'd assume same stiffness. Slightly different aero profile.

  • How many do you need?

  • Also slightly off topic

I can now get Kinlin XR31T and 26T disc non offset rims if someone is building track wheels or dynamo fronts. In 24 and 28 hole drilling. Sandblast finish

  • I've tried to get the tension as close as possible but i'm using the hand-squeeze method - not ideal so it might be out. And yes, I thought the wheel could have been buckled previously (it was 2nd hand)
Will attempt tightening beyond what seems comfortable; then LBS. Cheers.

  • Kinlin XR31T disc non offset rim

    yes!
They are getting rare. Only halo devaura left

  • I'm lacing a miche primato high flange front hub to an archetype rim
the hub is 24h - using a 3x pattern the spoke length is 299mm....this seems at the very extreme of usual spoke lengths...is this because i'm using 3x with a 24h rim? is there something unusual / undesirable about that? should i consider a different lacing pattern?

  • Just 3 or so for spares

  • is this because i'm using 3x with a 24h rim? is there something unusual / undesirable about that? should i consider a different lacing pattern?

    Yes, yes and yes.

3-cross on a 24H build is definitely wrong, because you're lacing from the hub to the rim at a 90° offset. This would be perfect for torque transmission if the flange was infinitesimally small compared with the ERD, but it isn't. This is why the maximum number of crossings is usually given as spoke count/9

  • I did not know youd posted that
    Must have missed that.
