  • So much this. I doubt a chrome book or a cheap pc is better / cheaper in the long run. My last three macbook pros has lasted me for 4 years each, and I use them daily for 8-12 hrs as a designer, so for someone just writing / browsing you can prob get 5-6 years out of them

  • I guess it depends on what she'd be planning on doing later in her education.

Unless it's some kind of creative area then realistically the vast majority of people use Windows and that's what most software runs on. Various other areas in terms of software development, etc will use Linux (which will run on most Macs or PCs).

It's unlikely that any choice will really make a difference unless she's doing something very specific, buy whatever you/she prefers.

A decent laptop will last plenty of time regardless of whether it's Apple. I'm running a Lenovo X220 that's about 6 or 7 years old and a Chromebook that's four years old and they are both fine.

  • I'm not sure I have had a single MacBook fail, apart from battery, I just keep passing them down... I know my folks have one that's at least 10 years old, anything post 2009 will be solid but I'd go for a 2012 (or newer) MacBook Pro (13inch) as they can run the latest macOS (Catalina) and very reliable and serivcable.

Also a good choice (due to retina screen and SSD)...

  • At work we recently got a brand new windows laptop, Acer or something. It wasn't cheap cheap, maybe £350 or so, and it's a piece of shit. Much better to spend that money on a second hand MacBook air or something.

  • I’ve got a 2013 MacBook Pro I need to shift.

  • I don't think there's much difference. The problem is generally that people are comparing £1.5k macs against £300 laptops and unsurprisingly the expensive items are better.

  • Same experience with Acer stuff. Not sure how they do it or why people buy it. Wildly shite.

  • Wouldn't entirely agree... when the 2016 MacBooks came out I thought they were wildly expensive and looked at the possibility of buying a windows laptop, even the top end ones looked and felt like crap, and we were talking near Macbook price.
I am sure there are some exceptions but most other laptops are just crap.

  • The 2019 cheapo iPad supports the (not cheapo) Apple keyboard case, which makes a laptop substitute for considerably less spend.

  • Thanks all. Plenty to think about. I will speak to my daughter and get her opinion. Santa is getting closer by the day!

  • I have a 2014 MBP that I can barely tell the difference from my 18 work MBP

  • Slide into my dm. I am in search of a reasonably priced working mac.

  • Need to pull my finger out and clean it up and wipe it but basically 2013 MBP with a big SSD and loads of ram. Also all the ports. Screen is good, all works, but battery has had many cycles - was my consulting workhorse - so it could be replaced if desired. Will DM with rest next week.

  • I have a Mac book pro laptop not being used which I’m looking to move on. I’m a bit of a technophobe and don’t really know what I’ve got. Can anyone advise how I can discover which version and what I’ve got on the Mac book so I can move this thing on.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Has anyone experienced probs with Apple Pay. I received a new card and now it won’t work. I’ve contacted my bank who says the card is active for Apple Pay. I’ve also contacted Apple but after a 70 min call the matter wasn’t resolved.

  • after a 70 min call the matter wasn’t resolved

..what did you talk about then for 70 minutes? Fucking football?

    : D

  • I was on hold for 25. Then I got a guy. He then put me on hold for 50 mins to speak to his supervisor. I lost the call shortly afterwards. Not happy ...
And it would have been rugby not footie. 😁

  • Here we go. Any idea how much this is worth? The Mac is in great condition. Used sparingly for the internet, iTunes and pics

  • I’m probably being captain obvious, but have you started with Settings>Wallet & Apple Pay>Payment Card and then removing the card and starting anew?

  • Yup. Oddly after a restart the old card is sorta still there. But I select add new card then it won’t work from there.

  • My Amex card won’t work contactless after adding it to Apple Pay.

  • My card is Danske Bank debit.

  • I am sure there are some exceptions but most other laptops are just crap.

I don't think this is true, there's a lot of really fucking nice non-mac laptops out there now.

The look and feel of MacBooks (and other Apple products for that matter) is indeed top notch,
yet gotta say all that sexy unibody shinyness is moot when their motherboards or graphic cards die or the fucking keyboards do not work properly.

  • I am sure there are some exceptions but most other laptops are just crap

That's not remotely an objective assessment, even if the assumption is that Windows is the only other option for a laptop OS. If you wander away from the Macverse, you do find yourself having to do a lot more research and, should you find a combination of hardware and config choices that suits you, you may find yourself having to do it all again in a few years time. How much that hassle is worth depends on your particular skills and needs. But the actual production quality and reliability in Macverse has been steadily declining.

Been using Mac hardware as either my work or personal laptop since OS X was a thing. Giving the latest hardware iteration a miss and may never wander back. Will see.
