Thing is, you could race the Divide on a whole load of different bikes and people do. A bike for riding US forestry and county roads and some basic byway type terrain at a good pace is easy to get mostly right. A bike that also handles tech stuff well in a way that makes it fun and involving like a good (even rigid) MTB should be, not so easy.
That funny little mudguard and the whole bike looks better with some gear on and it seems to do what it's meant to pretty well.
