  • You should tighten the skewer. When it breaks doing this, replace it with a nice Shimano one and restart the diagnosis.

    The noise doesn't happen all the time so unlikely to be wheel bearings. Probably freehub bearings. I'd pull apart the freehub and clean/lube that shit first. If that doesn't fix it I'd look at replacing its bearings.
