  • Someone mentioned 'revert' further up thread. In the last few weeks that word has started to crawl all over my inbox like a fucking rash.

  • 'Need state'

  • “Genuine Concerns”

That’s some sort of code for I know you laughed at my prejudice before but we are going to try and legitimise it this time.

  • Just got an invite to a 'epic t-shirt sizing' meeting, shudders.

Edit: for context, I don't work for some rad clothing manufacturer.

  • "He brings strong industry experience with a deep knowledge of the consumer sector"

  • Meeting where we look at the work which needs doing & figure out how long each task will take to do.

Usually this goes through one layer of translation, with time estimates given not in units of time, but numbers on the fibonacci sequence (for some reason). Recently, someone in the office has decided to add another layer to this by assigning 't-shirt sizes' to each number. Heaven knows why.

  • but numbers on the fibonacci sequence (for some reason)

    Part of Agile/SCRUM goblinry.

Always make a point of noting it's not quite fibonacci when it goes 1,2,3,5,8,13,20,... No-one gets tired of being told that.

  • I thought the point of 't-shirt' sizing was to get an idea of relative complexity of tasks, with a small but potentially expandable number of steps.

e.g. decide if each thing is S, M, L, XL, then if you find one that is significantly bigger, you might call it XXL, or might decide the task should be broken down into two.

  • Maybe, we do that at the estimation step anyway - generally anything larger than thirteen is broken down further.

Edit: it's a crap metaphor if that is the case, as t-shirt are hardly divisible.

  • explain why fibonacci numbers pls

  • The larger the estimate the less exact it needs to be. If something is going to take one or two days you can be pretty close. If it's taking 16 then you probably can't forecast that exactly so you may as well go with 13 or 21 for a fairly realistic guess.

  • Pretty sure they came down inscribed on some tablets from heaven.

In all honesty, I'm not sure why 'story points' come in fibonacci numbers. Can't find anything but fluffy reasons online.

Edit: @aggi gives a quite plausible explanation.

  • I'm not sure why 'story points' come in fibonacci numbers

Gives it an unwaranted sense of scientific rigour probably. Like, you or I may not know why it's fibonacci numbers, but there's definitely a proper numerical reason why "1","2","3","4" wouldn't possibly work.

    I feel like powers of two would be quite a good alternative - "1", "2", "4", "8", "16".

  • I feel like powers of two would be quite a good alternative - "1", "2", "4", "8", "16".

No, as per @aggi that would give it unwarranted sense of scientific rigour, e.g that task A with 16 points is twice as big as task B with 8 points.

Also, conjecture: they are trivial to calculate, so don't need remembering, and intervals increase at a reasonable rate: faster than primes but slower than squares.

  • Disappointment from ‘uplevel’ in an email from a vendor.

  • I thought you didn't use sequential numbers for estimating to stop endless debate over whether something is a 15 or a 16. with quite clear and significant distinctions between the boundaries makes it easier to agree on a number and therefore your grooming meetings should be shorter.

  • grooming meetings

A new one on me, but guess it's what we call 'refinement'. Or would do, if we got round to it.

  • some absolute plum on radio 4 just now, talking about transitioning and re wilding in the arena of running barefoot

it was 100% stupid buzzwords, had to turn the volume right down to zero

i think he was a coach who got people out of trainers and into running barefoot, from what little i heard

  • Barefoot running reminds me of this interview (5:00 onward)
Runner who can actually run and grew up running barefoot genuinely mystified by anyone thinking it's a good idea...

  • do u evn zola budd?

  • Have been told that one of our company products targets sophisticated technovators.

They are male, 40-50, highly educated/employed, want an elegant product. They look like this.

  • Is it chairs? He seems to need one.

Also, is that a door or window - or both?

  • I'm going to a conference next week. This is the first item on the agenda.

Warm welcome to the 24 hours and the space:
Domestics, what we are here for? the no jargon challenge,
    exercising our wings & connecting.

    Words fail me.
