  • Ask @spotter
He ended up in hospital when his did.

  • Stay clamps came loose, rack tipped forward into the front wheel when I was going downhill, causing me to fly through the air and skid stop on my head.
Had severe concussion which caused retrograde amnesia, emergency facial reconstruction surgery and a £2.5k dental bill.

If anyone has one of these racks I would recommend looking into other options ASAP.

  • Ooof, was aware of what happened but didn’t know it was with a surly rack in your case :(

Mine literally turned up the day before the recall, already recycled packaging and trimmed a bit so no straight refund.. Liz has been using hers for touring for a couple of years.
Won’t use and will keep eye out for update.

  • There was some time now until Surly drew the line, I guess you were also in contact with them then? Also I am rethinking my 'look ma what I can carry upfront' strategy.

  • Did you install it without loctite?

  • I wasn't in contact with them no, I had amnesia as a result of the injury so I lost several weeks of memory including the accident itself. The ambulance was called around 15:00 and my memories of the day don't start until around 22:00. I was found in a middle of an empty road by someone who said it was apparent I had been there for at least several minutes. Up-till now I was only able to speculate that the rack caused the accident as there were no witnesses to the crash its and I had a bent rack.

  • It was installed as per the supplied instructions by my trusted LBS, I would imagine that loctite is something they would use.

  • Get that letter off to QBP!

  • Added fenders and decals. Finished.. for now

  • That looks great!

In other news, I'm about to put my 54cm Straggler frameset up for sale, if anyone is looking...

  • Not this again!

  • I don't think I've shared this. Needs some brake fettling but can't wait to find the time to finish it off and ride it.
Ignore crossed chain etc. (getting in before the photo police start knocking)

  • Before I faff about taking pictures and doing a classifieds, would there be any interest in a Surly Pacer, 50cm frameset, in disco tomato red?

  • Forgive NDS fail.

  • I have been eyeing up a midnight special and have got over 'the headtube is f*cking ugly' train of thought. Are there any differences on the 2020 version or is it just a different colour?

  • Fixed with a tapered carbon fork somewhat

  • That’s the plan.

  • Can't see any difference between the white one and the blue one (apart from the obvious). They even show both on their website so pretty safe to assume no changes for the new colourway.

I love mine, tapered carbon frok would make it even betterer.

  • Wondering if anyone in here can help. Got a Straggler frameset with I.S. tabs to mount brakes on.

I have a Rival Hydro groupset with post-mount calipers that I want to transfer to the Straggler. I am guessing I need IS > Post-mount adapters for the front fork and the rear of the frame.

Thing is, I can't work out what size adapter is needed - my rotors are both 140mm. Anyone got a clue?

  • Yes, IS to Post adapters. They are specced for certain rotor sizes so include 140 in your search.
Surly have a FAQ section where people asked the same question. They all mention 160mm rotors though so not sure if 140mm will work (unsolicited opinion: personally would run 160 especially if you're bikepacking/touring offroad).

  • When do you return? How much of that stuff did you use, lose, sacrifice?

  • If I'm planning on running a Straggler with a 1x setup and QR wheels, what is the purpose of the screws that go into the dropout? Excuse my ignorance...

  • I've just bought some for my cross-check, intending to use them to setup a consistent position for the wheel within the arch of the mudguard
