  • Does anyone want a pair of unloaded JBL L50 speaker cabinets before they see the skip?

A few scratches but overall quite nice.

  • Has anyone had anything like this?

When I play this tune on Spotify via my Chromecast audio to my amp all the bass disappears when the L/R balance is set in the middle.

If I turn it to the left or right the bass immediately starts to kick in - being heaviest when playing out of one speaker.

  • Your speakers are wired out of phase.

  • marked/red - positive
    black - negative
On both, unless you want to make your system neighbour-friendly.

  • Any suggestions on a decent (non-audiophile, let's be honest most of the shit I listen to is off youtube these days), cheap, small form factor amp I could swap my crusty old Denon for?

Like this (https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PS-Audio-Sprout-100-Integrated-Amplifier-with-Phono-Stage-and-Bluetooth-NEW/264478763981) but used and about £550 cheaper :)

  • I just sold one of them, ya bellend.

  • Soz, I don't often look in here. I've just got a bit tired of the flakey channels and thought "ooh I could get something that's smaller and actually works".

  • One of these might do:

SMSL SA-50 Hi-Fi Stereo Amplifier for speakers with Power Adapter (Black) https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00KBIV1WW/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_.nKMDb9F2N29B

I've not used one myself but people say they are ok.

  • I have one i can give you if all you need is an RCA in...

Very similar to what chas posted above.

  • I have 2 smsl amps and they're more than enough. Smsl 50 and a Q5 pro. The 50 has never been above 50% vol. It has serious oomph. They power speakers in my bedroom and kitchen. Only thing is I have to turn the bass all the way else it sounds dull.

I keep thinking I want a new amp but then remember that the smsls are plenty enough for a London room.

  • Cheers. I'll check.

It's an old single cube bose acustomas 2.1 set up with a CA amp.

  • Yeah I'm in a flat without particularly thick walls so my shit is normally run pretty low volume, at least until I get really drunk and bring the decks out. I'll add them to the list. I probably should just crack open the Denon and see what the issue is but it was like £10 from an Oxfam 10 years ago so I don't wanna spend too much time on it.

  • I'm reaching the end of my tether with my vintage HK, I keep taking it to be repaired and then it comes back, works beautifully for a while then I get a pop and it goes quiet... Cycle renews.

Looking to buy a modern (read: more reliable) amp instead. New Cambridge audio cxa61 / 81 look good but what else would people look at?

Will use it for stereo (mostly streaming) and TV, medium sized room, currently running both a set of celestial ul6 and Rogers LSA7 speakers...

Other option I'm considering is just switching it all out and running kef ls50 wireless, but not sure about sound + connectivity with my (not top end) TV or TV box, plus £££

  • Maybe find a better repair technician?

  • Yeah I've asked around loads, happy to have recommendations but few people really seem to know what they're doing repairing vintage hifi....

  • Ah, too bad. I’m lucky to have someone decent close by (Canada).

  • Lucky! I thought this guy was going to be good, he does at least repair it on warranty - it's just a pain schlepping across London to get to him.

I am still thinking I buy a new amp, I can't stand much more of this....

  • Bluesound node 2i?
Just randomly found a shop that Reccomended it, seems to tick all the boxes for function and online reviews say it sounds good too, probably unbeatable at £500 price point. However, again online reviews, a few folk getting it dropping off the WiFi network frequently and/or not being reachable by WiFi or Bluetooth from a phone to control it (network chip going bad?).

  • I have purchased an audioengine b1 Bluetooth receiver... I shall let you know how it goes.

  • Ah, had a closer look and they only have 1 input. Anything similar with a couple of inputs?
I run my decks and my PC through the Denon.

  • audioengine b1 Bluetooth receiver

What is it? A posh BT receiver to plug into non-BT kit?
My question would be - if you have posh audio kit, why are you sending source material over BT instead of cable. Mmm cables... #oldguytechftw

  • Pretty much yeah.

And because I have good audio locally on Plex but wish to play and cast to my stereo from my phone.

If I leave everything as source quality and have a high quality Bluetooth DAC I can achieve this.

I want better than Chromecast audio, and yet can be used as an external speaker to home automation stuff for low quality party music.

  • Ta, I'll have look
