I don't know the source of that image but gut feeling is that it's wrong, and no spiraling is going on. Someone's just composited them in to a circle for some odd reason. Also the contrast is way higher, cameras can't easily capture the light and dark bits at the same time, which already implies severe photoshopping.
I think what you get is more like this, a straight line:
