  • Yes. Slid across the tiled hallway like inspector Closeau in them. Will get a new heel asap.

  • I had a pair of Chruch's with irons. I hated it first but then started to like it. There's something about that slippery feel combined with the loud sound.

  • Just got myself a nice pair of black Grenson brogues on ebay for £60. I can't figure out the prices on some things on there, some stuff goes for near RRP that isn't in great nick but other stuff gets ignored.

  • I picked up some Sanders playboy chukkas for £40 yesterday brand new bit late in the year but at that price I'll keep them for late spring

  • Looking for some new boots to take over from my Iron Rangers (which I adore, but I've worn them so hard the nails are stabbing into my heels and I've now got fairly sizeable/painful holes in both feet). I'll get them fixed at some stage but in the meantime, I'd like something new. Budget I guess up to £500 though £200-350 preferable. Looking vaguely at Danner (Mountain Light?) but open to anything.

  • It's very sensitive to trends. Two years ago and certain Red Wing models sold for like £50 below retail even if worn

  • Nice! May I ask where from?

  • I use this for my ebaying

Basically brings up stuff that ends soon, has had no bids and with extra criteria of keyword, price, etc. A lot of shoes don't seem to have any bids on them so you can pick up some bargains. I got some of these for a tenner https://www.harrysoflondon.com/collections/loafers/products/basel-kudu-suede-grey?variant=27164186083428 and some William Lennon boots for about thirty quid.

  • rep for sharing that!

  • William Lennon boots are ~£200; less refined than Red Wing, but built like tanks. They're mostly made to order, so you'll have to wait about six weeks, but on the plus side they're more than happy to take custom requests - different leathers or sole styles are no problem.

  • If you like RW, why not another pair in a different colour?

Or for a UK option William Lennon. Someone here had a semi-custom pair (leather lined, pull tab, etc.) which were still <£300 iirc.

  • Isn’t that like, giving away trade secrets? Pretty sure you’d get kicked out of clown college for that.

  • Mountain light are excellent but quite different to Iron Rangers. SoS stock both so could try there?

  • Cheers, yep, will keep the IR (when repaired). Should have added I'm after something waterproof. Slightly fearful ML will be much chunkier than my tastes but we'll see.

Thanks also to @Thrustvector and @hugo7 - will take a look at William Lennon, too.

  • Speaking of which, this place is well worth a visit

  • assume you might not know yet, but how's the fit on those sanders - do they come up true to size, or a bit small?
    Thanks

  • Will let you know when I get them - I went for a UK12 so if they fit like other sanders should be ok there’s also some others on eBay (multiple sizes) but £150

  • I had to go a half size up on mine in comparison to C&J and Loake (John Rushton said this is normal for crepe soles)

  • thanks both

  • Around Angel there are a couple of good buys in the charity shops. The one at the start round the corner from the Angel pub (Fara?) and then the hospice one along the chapel whatever market street. Saw a few good brands including Bally and not-silly prices.

  • I was after some posh monkey boots a while back - walked past Cheaney the other day and spotted these Cole boots that I kind of like, something amiss with the eyelet spacing and think they’d look better in a smooth calf leather... bit spenny to maybe... https://www.cheaney.co.uk/cheaney-cole-r-monkey-boot-in-black-palio-suede-p1034

  • Candidates for a waterproof boot with a decent sole, vibram perhaps, compatible with a thinner office sock rather than a thicker walking sock?

Am wearing DM boots in the current weather to get to work but they aren't great with a thinner sock.

  • Dressy or rugged?

Anything Red Wing etc will work. Perhaps a blundstone if you feel agricultural?

  • @Tenderloin @mattyc Just seen this and realised I never reported back but those full grain Sanders chukkas I bought were huge, by at least one size maybe more.

  • Got a pair of Loake Hyde boots in black - worn handful of times - never got on with them. Basically mint condition. Size 10. Anyone interested? Can take pics if so.
