  • Since my lbs just told me it would be 4 weeks before he has time to instal my bottom bracket bearings; what is the @mdcc_tester aproved press fit bb instalation tool?

  • Any kind of screw press, whatever you can get for the least money and trouble. There isn't any rocket science involved, a cheap wrench driven one off of ebay or amazon will do the job just the same as a Park one with fancy handles.

  • @mdcc_tester what rim brakes do you recommend for running with road levers and 35mm tyres + guards? Budget isn’t crazy, but this will eventually be my best bike. Do mini v brakes allow clearance up to 45mm? Cheers

  • 90mm Mini-V should put the wire about 60mm above the bead seat. I've got to fit some at the weekend so I could take a measurement 🙂

    The #tester_approved Mini-V is whichever Shimano one you can find, there are Sora (BR-R353), Tiagra (BR-R463) and 105 (BR-R573) quality versions but the main difference is that the Sora ones have the studs moulded into the pads, which you can fix with XT shoes for less than the premium charged for the Tiagra ones. Other than that it's just finish quality.

  • @mdcc_tester follow up question, would I be able to run 650b and interchange to 700c with a mini v brakeset? Or will my rim size choice determine the placement of the bosses?

  • 700c is 622, 650c is 571 so if you split the difference in half you're looking at about 1" drop in where the pads and more specifically the mounts should be.

    Yes.

    The radius difference between 650B and 700C is 19mm, which is about twice the adjustment range of brakes.

  • I needed something like this about 18 months ago. In the end, I had a pair of Continental Mountain Kings on the bike anyway and stuck with them. Very knobbly but have stood up well on and off road including kid carrying since. Two punctures which have both been pinch flats on rocky paths due to low tyre pressures.

  • I’ve been using several kinds of marathon tires on touring bikes that also serve as commuters. They’re the kind of tire you put on and forget about, they’re a bit heavy though.

  • Any PF30 cup pullers / extractors particularly approved?

  • Hypothetical, that I would like an answer if this would work. I want to have the sealant advantage of a tubeless setup on an old open pro rim running tubeless gravelkings.
    Assuming that a tube retains the bead of a tubeless tyre under tube pressure, could I rely on the bead staying put with a tube and still take advantage of sealant clogging small punctures? I am going by the following assumptions:

    A tubed tyre will hold a bead at the required higher pressures without risk of coming off because it just does.
    A tubeless ready tyre will hold pressure on its own on a non tubeless ready rim if the rim tape seals nicely. Rough riding ruled out by the above.
    If a inner tube punctures in a tubeless tyre, with an airtight seal between rim and bead (and airtight rim tape) would sealant work effectively to seal a small perforation in the tyre?

    Thoughts?
