A former colleague's fear of birds was so extreme that his wife or extended family would have to ask restaurants to debone anything that resembled a bird and he couldn't go to carverys and the like. He made himself feel better about it by laughing about a friend of his who had a phobia of buttons.
The human brain is really odd.
My ex used to throw up and pass out if she even saw a photo of a spider. Even somebody saying the word spider was sometimes enough to make her lose consciousness. The risk of her dying as a result of her phobia was real. An extreme example but the main reason why I'm so careful about people's phobias!
