None of this would have happened if they hadn't gone into coalition with Cameron.

And the number one reason they went into coalition with Cameron? Because Brown wouldn't step down to allow another leader in his place - if he had, it would have been a Labour-LD coalition rather than what we ended up with. Interesting context for today in some ways.

I think you’re attempting to rewrite history here. Clegg was clear that he felt they should talk with the Tories first as they were the largest single party.

I can't believe Brown could have expected to have carried on as leader having lost that election - I don't remember any PMs who carried on as leader after losing a general election.
