I think at this point it's clear that I don't really read instructions and prefer to waste people's time on the internet.
Though I did actually read that, it's just that the instructions on the bottle didn't mention any of this.
Leave until rust has been dissolved or until dry. (A colour change from brown to grey will normally occur)
If rust is thick a second application may be required (...) before re-painting wipe with methylated spirits.
I was kind of expecting the rust to dissolve. They don't say "Rust may turn into a black, sticky substance, which can be cleaned off with methylated spirits"

I mean...but what am i meant to do to the ferrous phosphate. Paint over it?
Admittedly thought this stuff was going to dissolve the rust away, not turn it black. Thought that was the part of "rust convertors" rather than "rust removers"
