Locks that work

Hiplok just showed their new anchor at Eurobike which looks neat. Not sure when it will be available though.

I'm considering getting a large piece of concrete for my shed, it would be awkward rather than immovable but should act as a deterrent at least. I'm thinking something like this, with a chain through it.

We used to have a small bit of old railway line in the bottom of our shed that everything was locked to, worked great if a little fiddly

Interesting looking on here and seeing that the Kyrptonite Evolution Mini D lock that I've used for years and years isn't even on the list on the first page. Is it now considered poor quality and easily breakable nowadays?

I'd say the locks on this thread are for high security. Leaving your bike locked in the street for an extended period of time where there's a reasonable chance of it being nicked.

No, this is the primary locks thread, i.e. the ones that can't realistically be cut or broken that you'd trust your expensive bike to be locked up with overnight and not get broken, but are a bit impractical to carry around. That's generally the ones with 16mm+ clasps and monster-size chains. The Kryptonite Evo is in the Secondary Locks thread as these are a bit more practical to carry, but can be cut with big enough hand tools (pretty serious hand tools would be needed to get through a Kyptonite Evo). We shouldn't really be talking about Hiploks in this thread, @GA2G 's piss would be boiling if he was around to see it.

Huh, well ive used a Kryptonite Evo mini for 15/20 years as a primary lock with noone cutting it but fair enough.

A long-term user's observation about the Kryptonite M18 New York Lock. I've had mine for about 7 years now. I lock my bike outside at work and leave the lock in situ, so it's spent most of that time outdoors. It's still as secure as ever, but it's gone through about 3 or 4 maintenance overhauls where I have had to remove a ton of rust each time. The main locking mechanism is a steel cylinder in a steel sleeve, and water gets between the two and does its evil work there. The mechanism itself doesn't seem to be affected. I've just completed another overhaul and am about to re-assemble and regrease. I was wondering if anyone with the Abus Granit Extreme, which I am likely to upgrade to at some point, has similar rust issues.

In case anyone is wondering what state it’s in.

I managed to insert only one part of the u-bracket into the shackle. It now won't come out. This is an ABUS Sinus Plus 471/150HB. Any tips?

Is that easy enough job? I'd be interested to service mine. But dont know where to start.

It’s pretty easy. Unscrew the grub screws (mine have rotted off anyway) pull the rubber off and the rest just comes to bits.

The initial post in this thread seems a bit out of date. I need a chain and padlock to attach 3 bikes to a ground anchor. For insurance reasons it needs to be sold secure gold and for not getting my bikes nicked reasons, it needs to be really strong. What's the go to? It'll never leave the shed it'll be in so doesn't need to be remotely light.

I've got the FlexFrame mounting system for a Kryptonite lock. There's a spline that fits to the U lock that can be rotated and fastened via a recessed bolt. My bolt has gone missing. I think the thread is m6 and it's adjusted with an allen key. Any one have any idea where to get replacement?

Expected this to be marketing nonsense (it still might be) but it actually looks really interesting!

Reminds me a bit of Chobham tank armour (at least the use of ceramic in the mix).

The shots show that whatever cutting disk they used gets part of the way through the ceramic spheres.

My guess is that there will be a type of blade/disk that doesn't get blunted as quickly, and so it just chews through it.

It might be like the videos manufacturers put out where they claim something is un-chop/cut-able by using inappropriate tools or inappropriate usage.

I'd like to see someone like the lock picking lawyer have a go (where he's cut through previously "uncuttable" things just by using the right tools/techniques).

I'm always a bit sceptical of the value of locks beyond a certain point. It's somewhat analogous to the helmet debate in that having a (better) lock isn't among the top things you would do to minimise risk, although in this case it's something you can actually control. Again it's better infrastructure I suppose, plus whatever you would do to make people not want to steal bikes. They also don't stop anyone stealing your saddle/safety pizza/low stack top cap.

Failing that, just use a normal hex bolt and deal with the sticky outy bit until you find suitable replacement?

edit: just gonna use a bolt down one actually, bikes are pretty low value and I CBA

Is there a forum cafe lock of choice or are they all much of a muchness?

Abus 1150 works for me for Audaxing. Light and easily stored on seat post of saddle rails.
