  • I got some berghaus ones that weren't too expensive, made for walking so sewed a bit of elastic into the bottoms. They have full length zippers/poppers so good venting and stayed very waterproof.

  • So you need something you can rince the mud and rain-roadgrime off the calfs, shake off dry in the toilets, then put in your bag without it festering?

    I stand by decent goretex over trousers. But if you find them too hot just wear some Uniqlo airisum(?) boxers without trousers/jeans/bibs/etc.

  • I was really just thinking about some trousers I can wear all day that don't soak up much rain. My commute isn't long, 20 mins max depending on traffic, but it's enough to get a good soaking like the last couple of days. I used to have some Levi Commuter chinos that were kinda waterproof and dried quickly if they did get wet, but they don't make them anymore. I'm hoping to find something similar.

  • I think “drying quickly” is the way forward. Look for something with light DWR but not waterproof.

  • I think moving to a sunnier country is the way forward.

  • I have these (bought on sale) an they are really great, apart from the zippers which a joke. If you have decent mudguards I would say these fit your requirements. I also have the Levi's commuters (they are still available here in La Suede in my LBS) and these are a bit thinner fabric wise and a tad stretchier than the Levi's.

    Have a look for the commuter jeans on eBay.

    Also check out Zara for their nonjean trousers. That's what I always used to use as they were flexible and dried quite quickly.

  • I'm moving from a Surly Straggler to the elusive Soma Wolveine. The Straggler is currently set up with a 90mm stem, and fits really well. The Toptube on the Wolverine is longer, but the reach is less (mindblown)

    Am I correct in thinking this means the Wolverine will feel shorter, and have a slightly less aggresive riding position than the Surly?

  • It means that for the equivalent stem height the Wolverine will probably be longer, so if anything you'll need a shorter stem to get the same position.

  • Slammed Wolverine with a 90mm stem would be close to the straggler with 40mm of spacers and a 100mm

  • I run the straggler with a 0deg stem slammed at the moment. which means my bars will be higher with the Soma - ideal.

    Also considering to move to Planet X Geoff bars, with the 90mm stem at first. Or should the stem be longer with those bars?

  • I am quite liking my pair of swrve midweight-wwr-trousers not been caught in a torrential rain and gotten soaked but when they were wet they dried pretty quickly and because they aren't super heavy they weren't too uncomfortable to be sat in in college.

    They have lightweight wwr trousers too which would probably dry in no time and I'm tempted to try but I'd think if they were any lighter than the midweight ones I have they'd probably be just for summer and I'd worry a little about how durable they could be.

    General advice with Jones-style loops seems to be use the same length stem as you would for flat bars. This lets you move your weight further back on the ends of the bars, and still be able to reach the front of the bars for AeroGainz. I'm still experimenting with mine...

  • My stamina’s pretty average at the moment (2 young kids = not as much cycling as I’d like) and I do notice it when I do occasional track session especially.

    Is there a dietary ‘hack’ (eurgh) that would just kind of make the most of what energy I have when I have a session/big ride?

    I’m thinking ‘eat my body weight in edamame beans the night before then have a g+t for breakfast’ - that sort of thing.

  • B vitamins play a large role in energy production and red blood cell.

    Genuinely 'light' options would be limited I imagine as the folks that value SS compatibility typically aren't fussed about weight. Even the Arkose SS frame is a porky fucker.

  • You seem to have switched to the Colemak layout. Maybe holding the Swiftkey spacebar allows you to switch back to qwerty?

  • My diet's pretty balanced and I reckon I'm getting decent amounts of vitamins.
    Would eating b Vitamin rich stuff before help, or is it more of a general dietary thing in how it works?
