• Hi,

So I'm commuting with my 80s Viner pista but i just throw some kinda random wheels on it that I was using with my ex ss. (front aero rage, rear paul hub and anonymous rim).

Im thinking about getting some track wheels, of around the 80s, like some gipiemme or campagnolo hubs.

The issue is I live in a city where streets are pretty messed up. Will I destroy 80s track wheels and waist money? I weight around 55 kg if that helps.

Or the other option would be gettin something a bit more modern, like a pair of used velocity rims.

(im kinda on a budget, not planning to spend more then 130 euros more or less).

    thanks!

  • I wouldn’t worry too much if you’re just 55kg, nor would I waste a nice 80s set of Campag wheels on just commuting. I’ve been riding Miche Xpress on Conti 4 Seasons 28mm for 3 years on the cobbled, shitty streets of Edinburgh and had no issues. Paid £130 for em from W*ggle. I’m 76kg on a good day.

  • I agree with this. You could build a retro looking wheelset that you don't need to worry about. Even if you used 80s rims, 36 stainless spokes on new hubs with sealed bearings will be bombproof. 28mm tyres will save your ass and wrists, and help protect the rims from knocks.

  • cheers thanks! yeah it makes sense

  • H Plus Son have some quite retro looking options don't they?

  • Mavic Ma3 rims with basic sealed Quando hubs look pretty retro and perform well for not much money, there's sometimes good deals on H Plus TB13 square section rims if you hunt about too and they look more classic than the v section ones. But yeah, unsealed retro hubs and nice rims will just get ruined so I'd not spend the money.

  • Good luck with 28mm tyres and an 80s track frame

  • Spa cycles are touring orientated so stock plenty of strong Rims ,the Ryde rims are very good considering the low price .
Cycle wheel endurance depends a lot on how well They have been built ....

These are classic / vintage looking :
