I think whatever his politics he was* fundamentally just a bad interviewer.

It was immensely frustrating to hear him constantly interrupting any attempt at subtlety or context-setting from the interviewee with a demand for a yes/no answer. In a lot of his interviews the guest was probably speaking for only about 20% of the total time.
