It was reported last year that the NHS was the world's biggest buyer of fax machines.
If 'beeper' = pager though...?!?

I remember, a long time ago, a fax arriving in an office I worked in through a phone / photocopier / fax thing.
It was very exciting, no-one had received one before.

Yeah, my wife regularly has to have 'the bleep' on her during her shifts.

There are advantages to pagers.
Reliable networks, prioritised bandwidth ensuring transmission of messages even in emergencies. GSM data and SMS are badly affected by surges in the event of an emergency incident.
Strong signals: cell sites might cover 10-15 miles, while a pager transmitter can cover 150 miles, enabling communication in rugged and rural locations
Designed solely for transmitting critical messages; a user does not have to sort out the critical messages from the barrage of texts, emails, and video content present in oneβs inbox
Excellent battery life.
No data storage and IG issues.

With regard to faxes, historically they lingered for a long time for legal reasons.
Its not the case now, but scanned and emailed or other electronic forms of signed documents were successfuly challenged in various court cases meaning that for a while Faxes offered the only legally admissable method of sending a signed document.
As I say, this is not the case now though.
EDIT: Just thinking about this some more. My experience of using MFDs in hospital environments is that they are often poorly set up and restricted in terms of what you can scan and send. This means that laziness is probably a factor...I wouldn't be surprised if it was quicker and easier to send a document by fax than by email in the NHS.

The other positive about pagers is that they of course look awesome and like you are always into things. Well overdue a comeback.
Those who don't believe, see you're laid behind
Got our skypagers on all the time
Hurry up and get yours cuz I got mine
Especially if you do shows, they come in fine
If you're with a G and you're sippin wine
Eatin caccatore with a twist of lime
Gotta meet your lover at a quarter to 9
Joint by base, then you get your high -

I've been dealing with some arcane government departments with names in Latin, and job titles like Queen's Remembrancer. And of course they only accept payments in cheque via the post. Which is a pain in the fucking arse when you don't have a chequebook and you're in Australia.
They are probably getting their first fax machine installed soon.

I remember a mate trying to send a funny semi-coded message about meeting for a smoke behind the art block. The operator refused.
FWIW in the US faxes still dominate. Especially pharmaceuticals. What seems ridiculous though is places often have faxes to email anyway.

Well it's an improvement. When I did a work placement in the late 90s I accidentally disconnected a significant part of the NHS email system by moving my desk. It was running on a spare server that was underneath it "for ease of access"
