  • So my Morakniv has started losing it's edge which has prompted me to finally learn how to sharpen a knife. As a complete beginner where do I start?

  • Youtube is good - lots of video guides for a starter

  • I started using a stone a couple of months ago; it's not too difficult to get the hang of.

You can get a cheap double sided stone which will be fine, something like 1000/3000 grit will be ok. Get an angle guide as well as it's handy when you are trying to build up your confidence.

Then watch a few youtube vids and off you go.

I've just given my two main kitchen knives a quick sharpen this eve and they are both cutting beautifully. Very satisfying.

  • Something else to try is a steel. If the blade had just gone a bit dull a few strokes with a steel usually is all you need. It takes a bit of practice but is fast and doesn’t wear the blade away.
