It looks (to the uneducated eye, for e.g. mine) OEM, which is nice.
-
• #49953
It’s a really nice conversion that’s for sure

The engine can be swapped from the MK2. Have a euro spec mk1 GTD with the MK2 td engine.
-
• #49955
Actually I think this is the manifold (if not the entire engine) from a mk2 Scirocco GT 16v. Super rare, LHD only. Possibly using the manifold from the Oettinger engines?

for those interested, seems like the old scirroco/gti platform does accept quite a bit of upgraded "factory" components haha

Does "numbers-matching" actually mean anything to anyone who doesn't wear sandals and socks at a concours event?
-
• #49958
Means about £50,000-£150,000 on the value of a Porsche, depending on rarity.
-
• #49959
My statement still stands, if I were in that position to afford one.
-
• #49960
If you get it for the correct price then that’s fine - problem comes from paying for numbers matching and getting a bitsa.
IIRC There was a case recently where Four Star Classics sold a car as NM and it had the gearbox from another car- I think the court case is still chuntering along.
-
• #49961
That's different, sold as misdescribed. But it's going to be likely on older cars.
Agree on getting at the correct price based on NM or not.
-
• #49962
As long as the parts are equivalent there’s no functional issue, and indeed can be an advantage of sorts because you have no fear of putting the miles on it as your not losing ten to twenty grand for every thousand miles on the clock.
-
• #49963
For e.g. that Mk1 Golf looks like a usable classic rather than something that you store in a climate controlled barn and look at once a year.
-
• #49964
Other eg - 912 with a Polo motor would be way more fun than a stock one but probably less valuable than NM. You just need to decide whether you want an investment or a car for fun I guess?
-
• #49965
Restoring a 912 is basically the same money as restoring a pre-impact 911 as they’re the same car bar the engine and a few details (dials for e.g.), I’d probably bite the bullet and do the six cylinder car.
At the moment I’m obsessing over wheels and brakes for the 996. Surprisingly hard to find an 18” rim that will fit over a 380mm carbon-ceramic rotor whilst looking good.

• #49966
Yeah, the cross compatibility of big block golfs is really easy.
-
• #49967
Ah yeah scirocco 16v! Super rare, if forgotten they existed. I’d say it’s definitely that setup.
The Oettinger head / inlet is totally different to anything from VW

There are a few 16v sciroccos that I know people did, both MK1 and MK2s. Think there were a few g60s too.
So MK1 Scirocco, MK2 or Corrado?
-
• #49969
Yeah conversions are quite common, original 16v ones are rare though and I think having that inlet manifold is what separates them from others no?
I love a Corrado Storm in that metallic purple colour but I think it’s best with the 2.9 VR6.
My grandparents had a black Scirrocco with a red (pink?!) plaid interior.
I’d quite like Group H mk1 in full berg cup spec

None of my friends/people I knew had an originals all were engine and or box and gear swaps. Remember trawling Italian breakers for MK1 gtd gear boxes for the taller ratios to make the cars a bit better at high speed cruising.
Remember reading about a twin engined scirocco from VW https://www.vwheritage.com/blog/2015/04/09/factory-twin-engined-vw-icons-past/
Think the metallic purple is a nice subtle colour but the yellow g60 just shouted LOOK AT ME I HAVE A SUPERCHARGER!!!!!
MK1 front debumpered from reminds me of the alfasud sprint debumpered front.

Did I read that right? You upgraded your 996 to carbon ceramics!? And 380mm... What are they from, a 997 turbo or something?
-
• #49972
Not yet, it’s something I’m considering.
PCCB discs are not cheap, but they are very light and give a handy reduction in unsprung mass.
However, the route I am likely to follow is 370mm fully floating AP discs with Radi-Cal 6/4 callipers.

• #49973
(The engine projects goal is 997 GT3 power, hence the brakes probably benefiting from a light upgrade, the current brakes can go under 17’s).
-
• #49974
Yup need another one, getting that power level takes a fair bit, what killed a lot of them was that folk didn't keep up the regular maintenance as well as they should, or rather that previous owners had not. Both engines suffered oil feed problems, should have had more baffles in the sump (or any!), and crappy servicing meant what oil was in there was barelu doing its job.
I'm keen for another though, liked everything about it apart from headlights, your better off duck taping a phone with its flash on to the bumper -

Looking to get some new tyres and it seems prudent to consider winter ready or cross climate type tyres. Does anyone have any experience on using an all-rounder that has a winter certification such as cross climate from Michelin? Or has anyone done a full seasonal replace for spring/summer and autumn/winter.
I feel like the latter is a huge ball ache but might be more practical long term.
Disclaimer - I live in Scotland so snow is highly likely at some point and my commute is circa 35 miles a day through some rowdy countryside.
Yeah, shame about the no supercharger bit.
A 16v G60 in a mk1 would be such a hoot.
