I recently tried to bond with a new dad-friend out here in the Kentish boonies by relating a mild anecdote about my status obsessed brother in law. I assumed the potential friend shared some basic value parameters and would find my story about my bro in law having hissy fit because the specific watch he like to wear on work ski trips wasn’t working. Turns out the otherwise “normal” dude, has an extensive watch collection, started at a young age by his late father’s gift of a Rolex. He’s not a dick. Minefield.
