If I buy smartphones, I always go for second hand so as not to create demand...(still using a 5s)
By buying second hand you're helping to finance the seller's new phone.

The seller would buy a phone anyway. The resale doesn’t fully fund the new purchase.
It’s not ideal but it’s re-using the cats that are already out of the bag.
I used to work with a large IT/Comms company. The idea that we should be searching out of slave free, conflict mineral free hardware with provenance throughout the supply chain was regarded with blank stares.
Nokia pre MS purchase seemed to tick the boxes, but who wants a Nokia these days? Yeah I know they are back independent. But what’s the other option if you want to integrate into society via smartphone, but don’t want to directly fund Foxconn?

Fairphone - they make a conflict mineral avoiding phone which is repairable and you can buy replacement bits. It’s fucking expensive and slow though. Buy a cheap Samsung and give a wodge to charity might be better.
Speaking of though, boycotts are ideologically flawed tools which force the onus for responsibility onto the consumer, rather than the corporate body that does the dick move in the first place. It’s merely saying the consumer is the most important, and allowing any bad actors to get away with anything.

Funny how ‘rip off prices’ is a reason to boycott which is exactly the reasons corporations turn ‘evil’
