  • I put down a pre order deposit on one of these Velo-Orange Neutrino Minivelos, and as the delivery is drawing nearer I'm trying to piece together some parts so I can get it built up ASAP when it arrives. It's supposedly arriving on these shores in November sometime so I have a little time to scour eBay for second hand bargains.

Right now I'm planning to build it into a single speed, flat bar type build, with the option of adding a rear derailleur in the future. I haven't really worked out what the cockpit will look like, but right now I'm leaning more towards some wide mtb risers because that's what I've got. My current build list looks like the attached, with the yellow components what I think would be prudent to search out on the bay. Main things that are baffling me are:

    • Rims for the wheel build, they're basically BMX rims but finding some of the correct width is a pain. VO spec Velocity Cliffhanger Rims. I might outsource this to whoever builds the wheels.
    • What cranks? VO suggest MTB cranks with a 39 chainring, I think I could go up to 40 so I guess I should have the pick of a bunch of 90s square taper MTB stuff, but its pretty unfathomable. Does it matter if I use a triple crankset with just one chainring?
    • What stem/bar/reach/stack/whatever I hate this stuff and feel like I should just do it by feel when I've got the bike build up (when I've got my LBS to build the bike up)

Linx of VO stuff I have been referring to

    FAQ

Why not just buy a Brompton?
I don't wear brogues to the office, live within the m25, or carry a leather messenger bag. The bike mostly needs to fit into a car, not a tube carriage.

Why not just buy a BMX?
I am thirty four years old, cannot 'bunny hop' and don't feel obliged to learn.

Why not just buy an Orbea Katu, which can be obtained as a complete build, with dynamo lighting and hydraulic brakes, for a similar cost to what you're paying for a frame?

Why not just buy an Airnimal Joey, it's the same size wheels AND it folds?
    I can't hear you.

You know what they say about men with small wheeled bicycles...
No what do they say about men with small wheeled bicycles?

They have to fit an adjusted gearing to provide a similar pedalling cadence for a given speed
    Very Funny.

The tyres on the bikes you have pictured look pretty 'bmx'ey, I'd imagine therefor there'd be no problem running a bmx rim? Most of them will be sans brake surface as most bmxes are ridden brakeless these days so should work well for your disc brake build.
