It read like he genuinely believed he was innocent like TooTallTim said maybe he's convinced himself of the lie, but wouldn't you get to a point where you go "you know what, I'll just fucking pay the fine instead of spending my life savings"?
Plus the shit about his son's inheritance - trying to make people feel sorry for him and his decisions.
