Mine was cheap to run, nothing really went too wrong for the 35,000 miles I did. And they're super easy to work on, so did it all.
But I get the insurance bit. -

I’ve got the large Yamaha one (with a little additional deflector) and a puig smoked touring one a deflector as well.

Getting utterly hammered by insurance quotes. £1k being the norm. I like the configuration and size of it. It seems to check all the right boxes, easy to slingshot miles, and can really yoink on it if some manic laughing is required.
@soul Does the deflector work well? Most issues seem to be with air coming over the top and buffeting your head.

It does. I can ride at 80 and a bit with my visor open and only suffer a little turbulence around the top of the helmet.

What's the tracer, surley cant be much less?

Fell in love with my bike again this summer. Had it 15 years. Seeing Souls Yamaha looking so modern I thought I should balance the scales with a 40 year old design. :)

Just spent a week in Corfu, never seen so many old Africa Twins in one place. Has me hankering for some 90s all-road goodness. Damn ULEZ

I had a VT400 for quite a while. Sleeved version of the VT500. The Honda V Twins were lovely to ride. Laid mine down a few times though, still managed loads of flat out runs to Portsmouth and back in all weathers.

Winner.

I used to have a VT500, bloody loved it but had to get rid when I moved back to London for a bit and my insurance went up x10

They have a really nice sound.
One of my neighbours had an Africa Twin but he'd had the VT500 before. He gave me the workshop manual for the Vt500, pretty sure I still have it. There's certainly some family similarities between the VT's and the Africa. Maybe less so with the 750's.

Bought mine for £500 in 2012, commuted between London and Brighton, and it gave me way less reliability concern than the much newer, much more expensive triumph I’m on now

Panniers by samsonite?
-
• #14295
They would be more affordable! Those Krauser panniers are quite pricey. They are very useful though and it creates a great platform for sacks of sand etc. It's one of the big reasons I can't find a modern alternative.

That's very interesting. I wonder how a 1990 Africa Twin would compare to the latest iteration.

That’s dope. I always liked that era - they look so cool. Nice little classic.

Went for a ride on this today. Only took me 9 months...

Yeah, got mine on PCP.
Shopped in my MT09 and got it on 3 years at 9,000 a year.
Less than £60 a month which is basically free.
