  • I want one of those scooters

  • so many on Q1

  • I want one of those scooters

    Me too.

Obviously for use on private property with the permission of the landowner.

  • They’re catching people at the lights jumping Shoreditch high st. and Old St junction this morning.

  • Yeah I got done the other day in Hoxton, careful when jumping the lights during the day

  • I'm surprised by the collective reaction to the po po policing scooters. They're nearly always ridden by twats and they're illegal. I'm glad to see them taking some action.

  • Not sure the reasoning for them being illegal is very sound.
And the ridden by twats comment does nothing for your argument

  • Can't really confirm that, the ones I've seen on the road so far I've had absolutely no issues with.

  • What do you mean by 'the reasoning for them being illegal'?

They just are--they're motorised vehicles, for which the law in this country requires a licence. They are therefore illegal to use without one. What you can certainly criticise if you want is that there's no licensing scheme for them, but that they are illegal is completely clear.

As I've said before, I support the ban on them. I think they are much too fast for what they are for their users to be granted licences, plus lots of other associated problems.

The same goes for motorised skateboards and the like, and I think the law on electric bikes needs a serious new look (this is a Europe-wide problem).

Today I saw two motorised skateboard users just as they passed each other in opposite directions. One was on the footway and in surprise the one in the carriageway craned his neck to see him and nearly crashed. /csb

  • Just seems inconsistent given that ebikes are legal.
I agree the law needs to be looked at here but I also think laws around bikes, scooters, skateboards use should be included in such a review.
I think there any many positives to both motorised versions, I do have concerns over the batteries mind.

  • ebikes are legal

Only pedal assisted ones. If they were twist and go like the scooters are then they’d be classed in the same category as mopeds and you’d need a license (at least CBT), registration and insurance

  • Yeah highlighting the ridiculousness of the current law

  • Not inconsistent though.

  • So you can’t also push your electric scooter along whilst the motor is operating?

  • That would be like pedalling a moped, wrong way round. If the motor wasn’t engaged, recognised you pushing and gave you a small boost while pushing, that’s assisting.

  • Didn’t answer my question... ;-)

  • Then no you can’t :)

  • ebikes are legal

Repeating what’s already been said, only pedal assisted ones. And they’re only allowed to assist up to 16mph (ish) to still be considered a push bicycle.

Think you are allowed up to 4mph un-assisted.

High speeds, tiny scooter wheels, poor road surface conditions and shit brakes = bad times :)

  • Some of them bow so much under the weight of the rider they look like they're about to snap in the middle. A bit like when I stand on my kids' micro scooter before jumping off immediately as I remember how much it cost for such a simple piece of plastic.

  • Saw two CoL plod nicking an e-scoot rider on Blackfriars Bridge yesterday morning. The smartly-dressed rider looked most unhappy. Tough shit, sonny.

  • PCSOs ticketing RLJs outside Goldsmiths again.

  • yeah .. I shouted 'great use of resources guys'

I had a chat with the 'spotter' just by the lights last time rounds saying that if you were on a bike in the bus lane and had to go in the right lane towards the traffic island by marqis the safest way to do it is jump the light unless a bike specific traffic light (that lets you go off a little early) is installed. And that they should use their resources to maybe catch the speeding drivers which are much more lethal. He gave me some text book answer that he was taught, I had stopped listening.

  • Regent's Park this morning.
Just past the lights at York Gate/Outer circle (so about 6 o'clock) of the park.

  • interesting, as its the hanover gate lights that are constantly jumped....

  • So many cycle police about in Southwark and Borough at the moment. Almost daily see them round elephant pulling over cyclists hiding behind the scaffolding by LCC cycle lane or at the elephant end of Kennington Lane waiting for cyclists jumping the junction there. Pre covid would only see them very irregularly but now it's almost daily, such a great use of resources to be targeting cyclists this aggressively.
