Aha, that’s different....no MOT at all in California aside from emissions (which is heavily cheated on.) Some of the death traps you see rattling around defy belief. Bald tires even on fancy cars are virtually the norm. No wonder the whole of LA turns into demolition derby at the first sign of rain...

What I mean by that is that a very large percentage of vehicles I see on the road in the US would have failed an MOT five years ago in the UK.

When I moved to NYC I was amazed how fucked almost every car was. Some looked like utter deathtraps, and cable-ties (not in an affected drift car way) seemed to be a pretty normal way to keep your car together.
As a merican i always find these sort of "in the US" generalized comments funny. It's a fairly large place. Almost 4 million square miles in fact. We have lots of different types of roads. In fact, in my state, most of the roads are gravel. You can get there you need to and avoid them, but the quicker route is frequently over gravel.
