  • The Pannier guys reckoned ~30% hike-a-bike!

  • Ben Hudson finished a couple of hours ago. The first single speed rider across the line and came 39th! 13 days, 16 hours and 29 minutes

  • Jesse may have scratched, but he’s won the scratch reports

  • Was he 'flaunting his privilege' to the bulls one wonders.

  • Would rep.

  • CSB, but...Does a shepherd herd cows? Surely that's a cowboy or a herdsman.

  • Maybe the accompanying heard of sheep is implicit in the word shepherd and the cows were just his side hustle?

  • I would come fitter, hopefully.

Love it. always room for improvement.

  • Very interesting read!

  • Will you be doing a similar write up @skinny ?
The geek in me likes reading about what kit worked and what wasn't so good. :)

  • Interesting, instantly read the whole report – and most intersting the remarks! Me sitting in the climate controlled office looking at the pictures from the race I thought several times what about a super light full suspension MTB? But having no idea or whatever.

  • For sure at some point. I'm taking some time out first.

  • I'd say it's deserved. :)

  • I thought several times what about a super light full suspension MTB?

One of the female pairs seem to have been riding it on Scott Spark FS bikes. Basically XC race rigs with a touch more squish.

Personally I think it increases the risk of scratching because of a catastrophic mechanical failure - whilst reducing your ability to carry shit. For a small improvement in comfort.

  • I wonder if some kind of softail would be good.

  • I'm mulling taking a Lux next year.

You say small improvement in comfort, I say reducing the chances of having open wounds over my sit bones.

  • Yeah that’s fair I really don’t know if FS would solve that issue or not over the kind of duration and intensity we are taking about.

The FS on lightweight bikes is there to keep the bike on the ground over rough terrain and therefor quicker and affording the rider more control-it’s not really there to protect their butt but it could help if set up right.

  • Yeah. There are a few passes it would help ride faster as they're super choppy.

I intend on getting my hands on one and testing it out.

  • Here are the pair I was referring to.

  • Yeah I couldn't believe how 'light's they went. I saw them at the start and thought theyd left half their gear at the hotel.

  • I know it’s incredible but I guess in a pair you can slim down a bit on certain items?

I thought it might have been of necessity because of the limited capacity of those small racy frames.

  • Share a few tools and the same tent. But then the tent is bigger. So not really.

    They just went light.

  • I don’t think that particular pair slept at all so no tent needed.
