Wanted mtb bits

  • Sorting my old Kona out as a budget s/s for cruising the South Downs (and yes I’ll be pushing the bike a lot)

    Looking for:

1x chainset with narrow wide ring
    Ss hub conversion kit thingy
Some half decent folding mtb tyres
    Some lock on grips
Possibly a cheap dropper post, I think it’s 27.2 will confirm
    Cheap fixed 26” rear wheel
    Probs some other bits tbc

    Whatcha got?

  • 26" wheels I'm guessing?

  • Yes 26”

  • Thought as much, I have some 29er tyres going, sorry

  • No probs

  • How big tyres you looking for? I got a bunch hanging around all in the 2.2 - 2.3 range.

  • I've just found some Azonic PDW handlebars in the shed, if they're of any use?

  • I have some 2.4 continental rubber queen tyres cheap, ust tubeless ready too.

  • I have a Sram Rival 1 chainset with the original 42t and a direct mount chainring with 36t for it.

  • I have no idea what I’m doing. Not sure what size tyres I need, the rims aren’t modern, I’ll measure when I get home.
No idea what gearing I need either?

    @platypus any suggestions?

  • any tubeless compatible wheelset
shimano saint 10 speed shifter + zee mech (not the DH one)
    sunrace 10-42 cassette
    shimano deore m615 brakes
    brand x ascend dropper post
    shimano zee crankset
schwalbe nobby nic or racing ralph snakeskin tyres

^ all of this is tried and tested, well priced second hand, and very sturdy without being too heavy

  • "Ss hub conversion kit thingy" won't work with fixed gear will it?

  • Two builds my friend

  • You probably won't get a 2.4" tyre in the back of an old steel Kona, I recall having to trim the edge of the nobs (stay with me) on a rear Panaracer Magic 2.2" when they came out in @ 1995 to fit it in the back of my 94 Kona.

  • Cheers for the advice. I’m aware I’m settimg myself for things not working properly as a result of trying to retrofit stuff. This is the story of all my builds.

  • Actually thinking about it, the WTB Laser Disc Single Duty Rear Hub from the wheels I'm selling may be of interest - Single Speed Disc Wheelset - Shimano XT Front Hub, WTB Single Duty Rear Hub, Mavic A317 Rims with rotors: £40. That hub can be extracted from the wheel if so, it's a great hub although freewheel disc not fixed.
