Can you imagine the absolute outrage if this happened in the UK
(Motorway speed limits being decreased to fight pollution)
-
• #57930
Not so sure about that. They slready do reduce the speed limit on the Mmm1 around Sheffield to reduce pollution

I'm increasingly baffled by the use of genitalia as a derogatory remark.
That, to me, looks like a perfectly proportionally shaped, healthy cock. Placed on the right person it could bring about a lot of joy. What's that got to do with Gove?
-
• #57932
oh really. Well in that case I entirely take it back as I had no idea :-)

• #57933
He’s a giant cock?
-

Also, when you’re looking for amusing pictures of things drawn big on beaches, your options are pretty limited. It’s not really my fault that the giant beach graffitists of the world have such a limited palette.

in a stunning display of white privilege, white man successfully sues for being racially abused by man using epithets usually reserved for black people.
-
• #57936
Is that really what you take from that? It doesn't seem to be a case of white privilege to me, he was pretty badly bullied for 4 years.
-
• #57937
Absolutely, and fuck that Thor chump into the sea for using that sort of language to describe anyone, but to suggest the employee was the victim of racial abuse rather than vanilla flavoured verbal abuse is absurd.
-
• #57938
I think bullied because of your nationality may come under racial abuse under UK law.
-
• #57939
'Vanilla flavoured'? He was (also) abused specifically with words usually reserved for black people. Which makes absolutely no sense to me logically, but there we are - the words themselves are very definitely targeting race though.
-
• #57940
Yeah, just not his
To claim you are the victim of racial abuse because someone used the K word to describe you, particulary if you are a white south African, is deeply problematic.
-
• #57941
It's a pretty weird one for obvious reasons, but not only was he specifically targeted for being a foreigner, they also used race essentially by association. That's still racial abuse to me, and on the other side of the equation, it's definitely the thing that Thor Atkinson guy needs to be done for.
-
• #57942
then call it xenophobic abuse or any of the myriad other words suitable in this situation. to call it straight up racial abuse devalues the actual racial abuse all too often directed at people these words are used to describe.
hey ho, here's hoping Thor Atkinson's business goes tits up as a result.
is Thor a traditional English name?

The future of La France Profonde hangs in the balance;

I think the terminology used might be a result of the way UK law is written. Which may or may not be based on white privilege.
Thor got his picture in the daily mail so is probably a hero to many now.

CSB: An ex-colleague of mine who moved to the English countryside had a rooster. Then, new neighbours that were only down for the weekends complained to the council and the rooster had to go.
People like that do my head in, get earplugs or just GTFO back to the city. Asking the owner to build a wall for their convenience isn't on.
There was another case about Maurice the rooster, no verdict yet it seems.

I have absolutely no sympathy for people who complain about animal sounds. Ridiculous.

It's really quite impressive how long the list of misleading or blatantly untrue statements by Johnson already is. I mean, the same thing happened when he was Mayor of London, but as 'Prime Minister' ... today we have a former Tory cabinet minister accusing Johnson of talking 'nonsense'. Does anyone care? It seems to me people are not so much focusing on Johnson's blatant unsuitability for office as on what's going to happen next. He does genuinely look and sound rattled as he gives yesterday's speech, and the noise from the protesters makes him sound as if he's under siege there.
-
• #57949
I'm not sure if does, the abuse was racial, even if racism by proxy, the charges should be racial, the compensation should possibly be xenophobia based if that's a thing but the problem isn't that this guy got a pay out, but that there are going to be countless worse cases for black people that don't even get a look in.

I know someone who used to live in a small harbour town with small active fishing port that lately becomes popular with retirees and second home owners.
One fisherman used to set up a barbecue and grill his catch to for the locals of a Saturday, as a token gesture of community etc. FOR YEARS.
New neighbors complained they dislike the smell of fish and tried to get him shut down. They literally live on the harbour side.
